Cannon Beach Citizen
At 11:37 p.m. Tuesday, the Seaside Fire Department responded to a report of a roof fire in an apartment complex at 110 Fifth Ave. The fire was confined to the sides of a wall and the roof. Some water damage also occurred. Estimated damage was $2,000 on a building with an estimated value of $250,000.
Property owner Craig Benjamin told firefighters that he and his wife awoke to a carbon monoxide smoke detector alarm and saw fire outside the apartment.
Roofers had been installing a new roof that day, and firefighters suspected that sparks from a torch pipe used to heat up the tar had fallen down a drainpipe. Leaves in the drainpipe apparently began smoldering and eventually caught on fire.
No injuries occurred and no one was displaced. Cannon Beach, Gearhart, Medix ambulance and the Seaside police assisted.
