The Lower Columbia 12-and-under Cal Ripken All-Stars are latest Clatsop County team to win a state championship.
The All-Stars took first place at the state tournament in Sandy, July 24 and 25. The team of Lower Columbia players won their first three games by scores of 9-3, 4-3 and 8-6 to secure a spot in the championship game vs. West Linn.
And Lower Columbia crushed their opponents, 16-1 in four innings.
By winning the 2010 Cal Ripken North Oregon State Championship, the team earned a spot in the Cal Ripken Regional Tournament in Kelso, Wash. Opening ceremonies for the Regional tournament took place Wednesday at Tam O'Shanter Park.
Lower Columbia will play its first game this morning against the Kennewick Nationals, and will return for another game at 3 p.m. vs. the Kennewick Americans.
Game 3 is scheduled for Friday morning against East Montana. Bracket play will start at 4 p.m. Friday and will continue Saturday.
The winner of the regional tournament will advance to the Cal Ripken World Series in Wilson County, N.C., Aug. 12 through 19.
